And we’re down….
Requiem is going to be out of commission for a little bit.
This weekend, we decided that we were going to upgrade the 6 year old WD Black hard drives in our production system to SSD’s. Unfortunately, the migration process didn’t go so hot.
About 25% of the way through, my OS crashed in the middle of the migration, causing me to have to shift cloning software. The 2nd software cloned my drive but screwed up the partitioning and killed the EFI boot setup on my old drive, and locked one of the SSD’s into an endless loop where it was looking for the cloning software that was no longer in existence because of the partitioning being hosed on the 2nd migration attempt. I managed to get everything up and running again, at the cost of pulling an all nighter on May 1/2.
When I finally made it to sleep at 8:30AM, I actually had the locked up SSD running again with a fresh OS install…but, as you have probably already guessed, I have to reinstall everything.
…and since the only restore discs I had here were for earlier Windows 10 versions, I have a lot of updating to do. Hell, I can’t even install the drivers for my graphic card yet because it’s not compatible with the version of Windows 10 I had to update to. 🙁
Now, on the good side…I had everything backed up and I didn’t actually lose any data out of the whole damn mess. I just have multiple major OS updates I have to install, plus all my graphic 3d software needs to be reinstalled. Everything is still there, I just need to get stuff put back in and pointing in the right direction. Oh, and I now have (2) 4TB SSD drives in my main workhorse, which is nice.
I’ll let everybody know when we’re up and running again. And sorry for not at least having a cool picture to go with this trainwreck of a news update, I don’t have the software installed to do it yet.
No issues on the wait, though are you sure the clocktowers weren’t involved? 😀
No Towers, just OS trainwrecks. If things hadn’t crashed during the first clone run, none of the rest of the mess would have happened.
good luck with the hardware software upgrade’s
I was pretty much dead on my feet when I wrote that news post, I have to admit.
That’s what ended up saving my neck this time around. I finally just blew everything out and Re-OS’d the whole thing. First time in 6 years, too. 🙂
Hell, I think the best part of everything was when I finally got my graphic card drivers installed. 1024 x 768 on a single screen is a real drag when you are used to 1920 x 1080 dual monitors
Appreciate the background info. And as previously said – good on you for doing backups!
