    And then there’s the bit where the “friendship” with his mentor is shown only with a single line of dialogue while the rest of the movie has them verbally sniping at one another…

    I have no idea if we’re talking about a specific movie here or movies in general, but my litmus test has always been – if you can watch the movie with the sound off and not mis any important plot points, they probably bought the script at Costco, on sale. Special effects are cool and I love a good action movie, but a well structured plot with developed characters are going to make ANY movie better. This is something completely foreign to hacks like Jar-Jar Abrams.

    There are several classic films that don’t NEED dialog to be moving and entertaining, but that’s intentional on the part of the director.
