This is what I don’t get. It’s obvious that the gate is something that should remain secret. It doesn’t seem wise to send a bunch of grunts in there to guard it. The more people aware of it, the more chances of the secret getting out. You’d want combat-capable people from the intelligence services for this mission but there’s a limited supply of those.

I don’t remember this concern even being addressed (so far anyway).

If I recall the history of the world correctly, the first people to arrive came through a gate/portal or similar at an early stage in their history.

The records might not be brilliant, but presumably the Houses do have contingency planning for just in case it happens again…
