He’s not actually infected with a computer virus. That’s quite a bit of hyperbole on his part and the BBC’s. He’s just a carrier. Until your personal or mobile computer has equipment added to it that can read the type of chip that he is carrying under his skin, your computers are quite safe from him and others who will follow.
I’m more interested in the idea of this a vector for future story mischief. 🙂 I got talking over a lot of this with a friend of mine about five years ago now.
At the time, we both were wondering how soon it would be before someone was brought up in court on charges of committing murder with a few lines of computer code.
The implications for practical applications for a professional assassin, when biomedical implants for heart, lung and kidney transplants become everyday are mind boggling. Yes good story line, also implant the chip in someone who is unconscious and doesn’t know they have it makes them the perfect scapegoat assassin.
Heck, the implications for the average shlub with a grudge is mind boggling too. If someone can find instructions on how to hack their iphone, they can definitely pull this one off.
Heh, we got all of these credit card companies adding chips to their cards now, that would make one hell of a vector if you did it right.
People have been infected with computer viruses for years. Any chain e-mail is, in effect, a computer virus. Any e-mail that asks you to delete suff (e.g. “if you receive an e-mail with the subject…”) is a computer virus that gets the human host to cause damage to their own system (all be it minor [for the time being]).
