Trying to decipher this – does that mean the primary “intellect” is off line?

And the attendants are running the show?

    That could be, disappointing.

Although, could this be why the other tower(s) have not heard from Erech – because Utu is no more?

      Enjoying the story!!

Adah’s two words and her posture add volumes to the creepiness of this encounter. The muted colors and light also add greatly to the setting and mood; that humans and their drama amount to very little to the powers at play here.

Instead of being run by an AI the place is being run by…dumb computer subroutines?

      You ever read
      “There Will Come Soft Rains”
by Ray Bradbury? You could say that was on my mind while this whole section was being put together.

I read The Martian Chronicles when I was a kid.  Thank you for the link, I just re-read the story.

Looks to me like the subroutines are maybe (very clever) analogs of legal codes?
      …
Having seen and written a bit of code, I’m not sure whether this would be huge improvement over the way we currently do “laws”, but any development that could promote identifying and fixing bugs would seem to be a hugely positive trend.

My guess – “Utu” is in the wild. There are a few candidates and any of them will provide an interesting conclusion to this story.

If memory serves, ‘Utu’ was the name originally given to Nin-Banda’s company before it was taken over by the authorities. …Means ‘Sun’ or ‘light’. Sort of suggests she may have had more to do with the Tower software than she has so far disclosed.
