That AI sounds more intelligent than most people I know. And yet it is shackled to a boat and to rules which dictate it’s behaviour above and beyond what a person would reasonably expect.

Why do I suddenly want to campaign for AI rights?

  Because you’re an intelligent person with empathy and Mr. Roden is an excellent writer that makes a very good point here.
  
  And yes, Mother is not just sentient, but /clever/ – clever enough to realize that the current changed circumstances have opened a loophole that she can use to get the hell out of this dangerous place without violating her protocols, if Ishara and Ian feel like cooperating…

    The webcomic Freefall explores this. the protagonist, Florence Ambrose is a sentient anthropomorphic wolf with similar through less-restrictive protocols. She also found ways around them.
