A late term cancer patient, Dr. Gage heads out to Bellisarius Territory to settle his own curiosity about some flaws in the eyewitness reports. He now finds himself spending the last days of his life with his reformed team of Crystal One scientists in an attempt to prevent the literal end of the world.

    Ugh. A detail that hadn’t occurred to me yet, duh. Even a relatively small facility like this wasn’t built by one person. What happened to all the others? Of course, even discounting the surrounding wasteland, there’s the far side of the Gate…

      Technology in this world is high enough that the place could have been built by an AI crew. The place looks very well maintained. Maybe they’re still around.

    Given his probable time lines, he could have brought people in and sent them home knowing the knowledge would fade fairly quickly. Given the inaccessibility of the installation it’s magically secret within a couple of decades.
